CMS has introduced new guidance that changes the way we respond in the event of a positive COVID-19 test. We are now able to do contact tracing, and only areas of the campus that are directly affected by the positive case will have visitation restricted. We are continuing to follow all recommended guidance for ongoing testing. Please reach out to social services if you have questions regarding visitation.

At this time, Cedar Crest will be discontinuing with the weekly letters. We will continue to update the website with any changes on the campus. In the event of an outbreak, we will resume updates via mail. Any changes directly impacting your loved one will be communicated with you directly—our goal is to continue to provide information and answer questions to the best of our ability. TO:       Cedar Crest Independent Living Residents & Family

FROM: David E. Tanck, President & CEO

Meredith Aarud, VP of Clinical Services

RE:        Positive Cases of Covid -19 in IL Apartments

Dear Residents & Family members,

As our nation, Wisconsin and local communities continue to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, we want to provide you with an update on how it has impacted Cedar Crest and the steps we’re taking to address it.

As of this morning we received confirmation that two additional IL apartment residents have tested positive for COVID-19.  This brings the total number of known positive tests in our IL apartments to four in the past two weeks; three of the four are active cases.  Contact tracing and appropriate testing of any known individual who may have been exposed to those residents who previously tested positive has been conducted.

After consultation with the Cedar Crest Medical Director and the local Health Department we have made the decision to restrict visitation to the Independent Living resident apartments.  The restrictions will be in place for 14 days at which time we will re-evaluate the necessity to keep this measure in place.  Previous to this decision, we had already discontinued all communal dining and campus activities but now feel the need to restrict visitation.

Please know that maintaining your health, wellness, and safety is our number one priority.

The current measures of restricting visitors, prohibiting group activities, and refraining from communal dining is necessary to ensure COVID-19 is contained as much as possible but we need your help:

  • Please take advantage of the transportation grocery service
  • If you require additional help normally received from family members, ask if staff can help over the next two weeks
  • Talk to family members who choose to visit after office hours and ask they reconsider visiting until after this two week window
  • Deliveries may be brought to the main entrance Monday through Friday from 8am to 4:30pm

Remember that you are a key partner in keeping yourself and others healthy—wash your hands often, practice social distancing, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth; notify staff if you feel sick.

We understand that communication with your loved ones is incredibly important and encourage you to communicate with them in other ways such as the telephone, video chat, e-mail, or social media.  We will continue to provide you with periodic updates with as much information as we can on our efforts to combat COVID-19.  Please refer to www.cedarcrestlife.com/covid19 to get the latest information.

On behalf of the entire Cedar Crest Family, we want to thank each of you for your continued patience and prayers.  It means a great deal to us.  Please let us know if you have questions or concerns.  I may be reached at 608 373 6301.  Meredith’s direct line is 608 373 6306.

11/27/20 Update

As we reported earlier this week via our COVID-19 webpage, we have additional positive cases of COVID-19 in both residents and staff of Cedar Crest. Today, we have no additional cases to report.

The positivity rate in Rock County has increased to 18.1%. Due to the high percentage of COVID-19 in Rock County, we will be continuing to restrict visitors on the campus in an effort to reduce our residents’ risk of exposure. We are continuing with the testing procedures that were previously in place related to the county positivity rate as well. All Skilled Nursing staff are being tested twice weekly, and residents are being tested once per week.

As a reminder, deliveries may be brought to the main entrance Monday through Friday from 8am to 4:30pm. We ask that no homemade food be dropped off for our residents—please limit deliveries to factory sealed foods or non-food items.

As Christmas approaches, we want to thank all of you for the dedication and care that you have shown for your loved one. This season is especially difficult with all of the restrictions that are in place, and we appreciate all that you are doing to continue to make the holidays special for our residents while observing the visiting restrictions. The Alzheimer’s Association created a list of some ideas and suggestions for holidays. This can be found at https://www.alz.org/help-support/resources/holidays.

We will continue to provide regular updates as we move forward. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

11/19/20 Update

As we reported earlier this week via our COVID-19 webpage, we have additional positive cases of in both residents and staff of Cedar Crest. Today, we are reporting two additional staff and one additional resident positive. All who have tested positive are recovering well.

We are continuing with the testing procedures that were previously in place. All Skilled Nursing staff are being tested twice weekly, and residents are being tested once per week.

The positivity rate in Rock County has increased to 16.9%. Due to the high percentage of COVID-19 in Rock County, we will be continuing to restrict visitors on the campus in an effort to reduce our residents’ risk of exposure.

***As a reminder, Thanksgiving virtual visits for residents of Assisted Living, Memory Care, and Skilled Nursing MUST be scheduled no later than Monday 11/23. To schedule your visit, please contact Emily Hammer at 608-373-6319. No visits will be scheduled after Monday to ensure that we are able to accommodate all requests.***

We will continue to provide regular updates as we move forward. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

11/13/20 Update

As we reported earlier this week via our COVID-19 webpage, we have additional positive cases of in both residents and staff of Cedar Crest. Today, we are reporting one additional staff positive.

We are continuing with the testing procedures that were previously in place. All Skilled Nursing staff are being tested twice weekly, and residents are being tested once per week.

The positivity rate in Rock County remains at 14.7%. Due to the high percentage of COVID-19 in Rock County, we will be continuing to restrict visitors on the campus in an effort to reduce our residents’ risk of exposure.

As we head into the holiday season, please be aware that all visiting restrictions are remaining in place until further notice. This is related to the high percentage of cases in Rock County. We encourage all family members to utilize virtual visit options to see your loved ones over the holidays. Due to the long period of time that a person is contagious without knowing they have COVID-19, exposure to visitors increases our residents’ risk of getting sick. We as a campus are doing everything we can to protect the health and safety of all our residents. We know it is difficult to face the unfortunate reality of virtual visits for the holidays, and we appreciate you partnering with us to ensure not only the health and safety of your loved one, but all of the residents who live on our campus.

We will continue to provide regular updates as we move forward. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

11/5/20 Update

As we reported yesterday via our COVID-19 webpage, we have one additional resident who has tested positive for COVID-19. The resident is on our in house COVID unit, and is recovering well at this time.

We are continuing with the testing procedures that were previously in place. All Skilled Nursing staff are being tested twice weekly, and residents are being tested once per week.

The positivity rate in Rock County is 14.7%, an increase from last week. Per information released by the Rock County Health Department, there were 2,914 cases of COVID-19 reported in October. This is 300 more cases than March through September combined.

The ability of our residents to see their loved ones is largely dependent on decreasing the overall positivity rate in our county. Please follow precautions, and remind those around you that each of us can help to reduce the numbers if we make small personal sacrifices.

As the number of cases in Rock County continues to rise, we want to remind all of our friends and family the importance of following all CDC guidelines. Wearing a mask protects others around you, and frequent hand hygiene, avoiding public spaces, and social distancing can help to keep us all healthy.

We are unable to resume outdoor visits at this time related to the high positivity rate. 6/11/20 Update:

Last week, we reported a positive employee case of COVID-19 via the website. Per guidance from the Department of Health Services (DHS) and our local health department, contact tracing has been completed and all resident tests were negative.

We have gotten many questions regarding the phasing in Rock County, and how the transition to Phase Two affects us as a facility. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a phased re-opening plan for long term care facilities that is modeled after the plan that is being utilized by the county. At this time, we remain in Phase One of this plan, and are working diligently to move forward into Phase Two as soon as we are safely able. A copy of this plan can be found at https://www.cms.gov/files/document/qso-20-30-nh.pdf.

Virtual visits will be offered in 30 minute slots for Father’s Day for residents of the Health Center, Memory Care, and Assisted Living. Please call by Wednesday, June 18th to schedule your visit. We ask that you coordinate one visit per family so that everyone gets a chance to visit with their Dad. Visits may be scheduled with Emily Hammer at 608-373-6319. We ask that no gifts be dropped off for these residents, although sending cards is encouraged!

6/5/20 Update:

Over the last couple of weeks, we have tested all our residents in the Health Center and Assisted Living for Covid-19.  In addition, we have completed testing of all employees.  All 362 tests came back negative for the virus.  We are very thankful for that outcome!

At this time, in line with guidance from the CDC, local public health officials, and our Medical Director, we are going to open up some Cedar Crest programs and services at this time for our Independent Living residents.  Please note that we are going to move forward in a thoughtful and measured manner.  Any future changes/openings will be made over time depending on how our campus and the greater Janesville community does in managing the virus.

Effective June 8th, the following programs and services will be available on a limited basis:

  • The Independent Living Beauty Shop will open on Wednesday, June 10th by appointment only. Connie Bilz will contact Independent Living apartment residents that have routine appointments. Residents can call 373-6897 to schedule an appointment.  Connie will be the only beautician and will take appointments on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.  Only one person will be allowed in the Beauty Shop at a time and masks must be worn at all times – resident and beautician.
  • Exercise classes will resume in the Social Room with strict guidelines. Only 3 people may attend class at a time, and more classes will be added at a later date.  Masks must be worn at all times.  Meghann will meet with all residents prior to the start of classes to determine level of comfort and scheduled attendees.
  • The Dining Room will open for lunch by June 15th. Two different seatings will be offered.  Only 15 people will be allowed in the Dining Room at a time; one person per table.  Masks must be worn into and out of the Dining Room.  Social Distancing guidelines apply.
  • Visitors will be allowed in resident apartments subject to the following guidelines:
  • All visitors must enter through the Independent Living Main Entrance. The doors will be open Monday through Friday from 8am to 4:30pm.
  • Lyn Soffe and/or designee will screen all visitors.
  • Masks must be worn at all times
  • All Social Distancing guidelines are to be adhered to and we are encouraging only two visitors at a time.
  • Visitors may walk the grounds with their loved ones but are to otherwise remain in the apartment. Masks must be worn at all times. No gardening or visiting in common spaces allowed at this time.
  • Mary Bielke will be offering Bible Study the week of June 15th. More details will be provided.  We hope to start Worship services by the end of the month.
  • NO OTHER SOCIAL ACTIVITIES ARE TO RESUME AT THIS TIME.

We will begin to allow new move-ins, transfers, and move-outs of Independent Living residents.  Lyn Soffe will coordinate all moves.  A traffic pattern will be established, a door assigned for entering and exiting, and a masks must be worn at all times.  Residents will be notified of resident moves in their areas.

We will continue to provide you with periodic updates with as much information as we can on our efforts to combat COVID-19.   Going forward, please refer to www.cedarcrestlife.com/covid19 to get the latest information.  On behalf of the entire Cedar Crest Family, we want to thank each of you for your continued patience and prayers.  It means a great deal to us.  Please let us know if you have further questions.

At this time, there are no new residents/staff that have tested positive at Cedar Crest. We continue to monitor and test. We will continue to update this site as more information becomes available.

This page will be updated regularly to communicate any confirmed infections of COVID-19 of our residents or staff.  Ensuring older adults’ health and well-being is our top priority.

WE ARE CONCERNED AND PROACTIVE: Cedar Crest is concerned about the spread of the novel coronavirus. The people we serve are typically more vulnerable to the virus and the disease it causes, COVID-19. We are taking action.

  • We have emergency preparedness and infection prevention and control plans in place. These provide detailed instructions for staff on how we address and manage infectious disease outbreaks.
  •  Our staff is trained in infection control practices and follows established protocols based on that training. We have experienced managing illness outbreaks, such as flu, and have a heightened awareness of the possible risk to our residents posed by viral illnesses, such as flu, norovirus, and COVID-19.
  • We have implemented daily cleaning processes at our community that are part of the emergency plan. We are following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in healthcare settings and communities serving older adults.
  • Because the coronavirus is spreading quickly, our staff is in communication with public health officials in our region to stay abreast of the latest developments about coronavirus. In addition, we are closely monitoring information from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services as well as those from federal agencies, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CMS, and the World Health Organization.

WE ARE TAKING ACTION: As we learn more about coronavirus and COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, we are educating staff, residents, and families. Current protocols we’ve implemented include:

  • For staff: teaching them about the symptoms of COVID-19 and monitoring residents for these symptoms; teaching staff about how the virus spreads and recommended containment actions, including staying home from work if they are symptomatic.
  • For residents and families: how to recognize symptoms of COVID-19 and what to do if they suspect that they or a loved one may be infected.
  • We are monitoring residents regularly for fever or respiratory symptoms, and taking appropriate action.
  • We screen every person coming into the community (essential visitors only).
  • For everyone: because older adults can be vulnerable to the spread of viral illnesses, including coronavirus, we are asking that everyone who comes in contact with our community members to be particularly vigilant and follow recommended guidance on prevention. Specifically:
    • Washing hands regularly and sufficiently.
    • Cleaning and wiping down frequently touched surfaces.
    • Limiting contact with others (social distancing).
    • Staying at home if they are feeling ill.

A fast-changing, potential crisis situation such as this demands consistent communication. We are committed to providing you with information, updated regularly. You can contact Social Services for more information (608) 373-6316.
